THE HILLS, Fla. –Longwood women’s golf continued its strong play despite challenging weather conditions to close out the El Campeon Collegiate today at the Mission Inn Resort.

Madison Lehr placed fourth to lead three Lancers in the top 10, and Longwood finished second in the 11-team field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Longwood’s women were incredibly consistent over the three-day event and only finished four strokes behind the tournament winners from North Dakota State. The Lancers posted a 314-316-317—947 (+83) on a weekend where the best team round in the field was a 308.

Longwood and North Dakota State traded the lead throughout the course of the day, and the Lancers posted a better final round, but the first-round lead for the Bison was able to hold off the hard-charging Lancers.

Lehr led the way with a 79-78-78—235 (+19), and she had nothing worse than a bogey in her final 18 holes. That allowed her to finish within two shots of a top three spot while leading Longwood.

Abigail Sheldon tied for sixth after firing a 78-79-81—238 (+22). She carded two birdies in her final round.

Avery Nordman tied for eighth to give Longwood three players in the top eight of the field. The freshman carded a 77-81-81—239 (+22) and had five birdies in the event.

Chiara Wippert improved over the course of the tournament, posting an 85-80-77—242 (+26) to finish in 11th. Her 77 tied for the second-best score of the final round.

Caroline Tragesser tied for 23rd, giving Longwood all five players in the top 25 of the 66-player field. Tragesser posted an 80-79-90—249 (+33).

WHAT THEY SAID:

“Today was a good experience—we haven’t been in the situation of leading a tournament going into the final day,” said Longwood Head Coach Megan Weaver. “You can practice pressure situations, but being there in competition isn’t replicable. We got off to a rough start, but then got into a groove after the first few holes. The team fought hard but just came up a little short. The effort and right attitude were there, and we should be proud of our best finish in years! We had three golfers in the top 10, and Chiara had the second-best round of the field today. Great way to start off the spring!”
