His medical status early Wednesday afternoon was unknown.

“My prayers are with him,” Premier Doug Ford told the Sun.

The premier said he had received word of the accident but didn’t know any of the details surrounding it or Mammoliti’s current condition.

Family is reportedly gathered at the hospital.

Popular figure in Toronto politics

Known for his unique and entertaining approach, colourful Mammoliti has always been a popular figure in Toronto politics since being elected to serve Ward 7 York West from 2000 to 2018.

But before that, he also served as an NDP MPP at Queen’s Park from the Yorkview riding from 1990 to 1995.

He has often been controversial with his comments and his legendary battles, including with his friend and sometimes foe former mayor Rob Ford. The pair had a love-hate relationship.

When Ford would put in $4 of expenses for the full year, Mammoliti, who had put in considerably more, wanted an investigation. When Ford called him “Gino Boy,” Mammoliti fought back with strong words of his own.

But when someone called Ford “fat,” he was the first to stick up for him. And Mammoliti hurt when Ford got sick with cancer and later died.

Likeable politician with out-of-the-box ideas

Complicated is the best word to described the guy affectionately known as “Mammo.”

Those who deal with him don’t always agree with him. But it’s pretty hard to not like him.

There’s only one Giorgio Mammoliti.

Mammoliti’s ideas — such as turning the Gardiner Expressway into a “High-Line style” garden and park like what they have in New York City, or bringing an NHL franchise to North York — were scoffed at initially but then later respected as progressive out-of-the-box thinking.

In a phone call with the Toronto Sun on Jan. 20, Mammoliti said life was good in his adopted home of Wasaga Beach and he was in good spirits.

Often flirting with a political comeback, Mammoliti didn’t say if he had any new plans but was upbeat and jovial.

Sources say his fall was accidental in nature. A source said a statement from the family is expected later in the day.

As the premier said so well, there are many praying for this much-loved political figure.
