The latest spring football league south of the border is getting set to kick off its 2026 season in four weeks.
The United Football League, the merger of the XFL and the United States Football League, confirmed major rule changes yesterday.
Field goals over 60 yards will be worth four points. A receiver only needs to get one foot in bounds for a catch. The ‘Tush Push’ has been eliminated, and you are not allowed to punt when scrimmaging inside the opponent’s 50-yard line.
TSN CFL analyst Glen Suitor wasn’t sold on the changes.
“If you’re doing the UFL change, where you get to the 50-yard line and as soon as you cross it, you can’t punt any longer, you might as well say at the 50-yard line, you get an extra down. It takes all of the strategy of coffin corner kicks and putting your defence back out there if you don’t make it. Those things are the core pillars of football, and those decisions are changing all of that. I’ve said it many times: there’s been so many different spring leagues and winter leagues and whatever they are that start and die down there quite quickly. I doubt that the UFL is going to last very long.”
