Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham is mourning the loss of a beloved companion.
The 29-year-old is currently in the offseason following an impactful debut campaign with one of the WNBA’s most exciting rosters.
After spending six seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, Cunningham was traded to Indiana ahead of the 2025 season. She thrived in a supporting role alongside Caitlin Clark, averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. However, Cunningham only suited up for 30 games before a season-ending MCL tear cut her year short.
She brought grit and physicality to a Fever team on the rise. But behind the enforcer persona lies a deep compassion for the ones closest to her.

WNBA: Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham grieves the passing of her horse, Bea
Cunningham grew up on a farm in Columbia, Missouri, where a life surrounded by animals shaped who she is today.
She developed a particular fondness for horses early on, spending free time riding and caring for them. The veteran winger has openly shared those moments with fans on social media over the years.
That bond made Tuesday’s news all the more heartbreaking. Cunningham lost one of her oldest friends in Bea, a companion she treated not as a pet but as family.
The Columbia native paid tribute to her four-legged friend in a series of Instagram stories.
“Fly high to my very first horse, Bea. Best horse ever,” she wrote.
The Fever guard added: “She was about to turn 36! The sweetest, most gentle horse. Sad day.”
For Cunningham, animals and the outdoors have always been more than a pastime. They connect her to her roots and provide peace away from the demands of professional basketball.
That closeness to nature defined her upbringing and remains a quiet constant throughout her career.
As Cunningham looks ahead to a new season with the Fever, she will carry Bea’s memory close to her heart.
