Environment Canada has issued a yellow level weather warning for widespread blizzard conditions across several Manitoba lakes, including Lake Winnipegosis, Lake Winnipeg (north and south basins) and Lake Manitoba.

The warning was posted Thursday morning and remains in effect for Friday as winter weather impacts the region.

According to Environment Canada, fresh snowfall combined with strong winds will create significant blowing snow and near-zero visibility beginning early Friday morning and continuing into the overnight hours.

Travel conditions are expected to be dangerous throughout the duration of the storm.

Conditions are forecast to gradually improve later in the day, with better visibility first around Lake Winnipegosis and the north basin of Lake Winnipeg in the evening, and later from Lake Manitoba and the south basin overnight.

Blizzard conditions and limited visibility could make driving extremely hazardous. Environment Canada advises the public to:

• Limit travel and outdoor activity if possible, especially early Friday through the evening hours

• Protect yourself from wind, cold and disorientation by staying sheltered — indoors or with your vehicle

• If you become lost or stranded, remain in place until conditions improve
