Algonquin College is again planning to cut 30 more programs, pending approval by its board of governors next week.

Algonquin announced the proposed cuts in late January, then postponed the Feb. 23 decision after the province announced it’s lifting a tuition freeze for Ontario’s post-secondary institutions and setting aside billions in new program funding.

After that announcement, Algonquin College president Claude Brulé said he was waiting for specific information about funding changes, and said the college would assess its programs after that had happened.

In a message to staff on Thursday, Brulé said he now has that information and has determined that “financial mitigation efforts must continue to ensure the College’s long-term sustainability.”

“This includes aligning programming with enrolment demand, labour market needs, Provincial priorities, and financial reality,” he wrote.

The board will now consider the recommended cuts to programs including sustainable design, journalism, financial services, and hotel and restaurant management, during a virtual meeting on Monday, March 2.

They follow significant cuts last year, including the pending closure of the college’s campus in Perth, Ont.
