An Ontario agency that investigates complaints against police has launched a probe into the activities of Peel Regional Police officers who have been caught up in a larger corruption investigation.

The Law Enforcement Complaints Agency (LECA) announced today (Feb. 26) that it has assumed control of the conduct investigation linked to Project South, which initially ensnared several Toronto Police officers and led to numerous charges surrounding drug trafficking, bribery, shootings, robberies and a murder plot.

In the wake of the arrests of the Toronto officers, three Peel Regional Police officers were suspended. None of the Peel officers has been charged with a crime, and their names have not been released to the public. Peel Police have jurisdiction in Mississauga and Brampton.

Senior members of the Peel Regional Police asked LECA to step in, and the director of the agency, Stephen Leach, has since determined it is in the public interest to assume control of the conduct investigation.

“I want to assure the public that we will be conducting an independent investigation into the allegations of misconduct related to Project South, together with any further misconduct allegations that may arise in the course of the ongoing criminal investigations,” said Leach.

LECA’s conduct investigation is not intended to interfere with any ongoing criminal investigations or prosecutions that are part of the Project South allegations.

A civilian arm’s-length agency of the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General, LECA is responsible for receiving, managing and overseeing public complaints about misconduct of police officers.
