Production on the second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy wrapped up earlier this week in Toronto. When it comes to indicators on performance, early data is mixed, with the series again not making it into the Nielsen Top 10 this week. On top of that, the series is being produced for CBS Studios by Alex Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout production company, with Kurtzman an executive producer and co-showrunner. Alex directed the season 2 premiere and recently said after he wraps up, he will begin talks with Paramount execs about the future of his overall deal to oversee Star Trek TV, saying he is “hopeful.”

TrekMovie had a chance to talk to Kurtzman’s co-showrunner Noga Landau along with series creator Gaia Violo about the season 2 finale and get a sense of their hopes for the future of the series. There are also some season 2 clues coming from the cast.

Season 2 finale ends with…

Starfleet Academy got a second season order fairly early on. Speaking to TrekMovie last week, actress Bella Shepard (Genesis Lythe) contrasted filming the season 1 finale with season 2, saying it was “bittersweet” with the cast not knowing what’s coming next. With that context, TrekMovie asked Noga Landau if the season 2 finale was written in a way that could work as a series finale, just in case. This is the approach taken for other Trek shows by their showrunners, including for Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds. But Landau made it clear, they chose a different path, telling TrekMovie:

“Absolutely not. We have so much story to tell. If anything – yeah, it is not the end.”

Series creator and executive producer Gaia Violo was also part of the call with Landau and she took it a bit farther, hinting that the season 2 finale could end on a cliffhanger, telling TrekMovie:

“It’s such a shocking ending, you do not want it to [end] – no, no!”

And according to Landau, they still don’t know if they will get the chance to continue the story past season 2, but they are hopeful, telling TrekMovie:

“Nothing yet [on if they will or will not get season 2] but we’re just – we’re so happy with season 2, and we can’t wait for everybody to see it.”

If it turns out that Starfleet Academy doesn’t get that third season and if it indeed ends on something of a cliffhanger, it’s possible the powers that be could be talked into giving the producers a chance to tie things up. Kurtzman was able to do this for the fifth season of Star Trek: Discovery, shooting a short “coda” that was added to the season 5 finale, making it work as a series. finale.

TrekMovie will have more from Landau and Violo, talking about episode 8. Look for that on the site soon, as well as an interview with Mary Wiseman.

Season 2 is “wild” + more Reno

We don’t know much about season 2 but some bits have emerged. Recently Paul Giamatti confirmed that his Nus Braka does not appear in season 2. He was always described as playing the villain for season 1, but Giamatti says the season ends with things open ended and he hopes he can return, if the show gets that third season.

And on the day of the wrap party earlier this week actor Karim Diané (Jay-Den Kraag) posted a video on Instagram teasing the season season, saying:

“You guys, this season was so wild. If you are at all having any kind of fun with season 1, just wait until sophomore year. Plus, there’s way more Tig [Notaro], what more reason do you need than that?”

His video also showed some brief bits from production on season 2, possibly the finale, making sure her hair is on point. The actress and comedian who crossed over from Star Trek: Discovery as Commander Reno was announced as a series regular but due to her schedule ended up to be a recurring character, appearing in five of eight episodes of season 1 so far.

Karim’s video also shows some of his cadet co-stars behind the scenes, and there is a shot feature Bella Shepard wearing a new red uniform.

Also Darem Reymi (George Hawkins) is now wearing a new pin on the right, which you can see a bit better in the image below.
