A man is dead in an officer-involved shooting in Mississauga early Saturday morning, said Peel police.

Officers responded around 12:30 a.m. to calls of a domestic disturbance near Paula Court in Mississauga, said Peel police Cst. Tyler Bell-Morena at the scene.

A woman had called police saying her husband had left the home with a firearm, said Special Investigations Unit spokesperson Monica Hudon at a news conference.

Once officers arrived at the scene they located the man and confronted him after “a short foot pursuit” near Fifth Line and Dundas Street, said Bell-Morena.

At that point there was “an exchange of gunfire,” said Hudon. Four officers fired at the man, who was struck multiple times, and was pronounced dead at the scene, she said.

She said five SIU investigators and three forensic investigators are at the scene. Anyone with information is urged to contact the SIU or upload any evidence to their website.

Bell-Morena said the man was known to police and two firearms were located at the scene — one that was used in the exchange with police and another that was discarded outside in the area.

The man was not licensed to own guns, he said.

None of the officers were injured in the incident, he said, but a bullet did go through an officer’s cap.

“That’s how close that this came to an incident where I would be standing here informing you of the death of one of our officers,” he said.

There is no active threat in the community, but there will be a large police presence in the area given how “convoluted” the scene is, he said.

“This is a very large scene spanning over several streets in this subdivision, so you can anticipate a police presence here well into the rest of [Saturday] and into Sunday,” he said.

Residents are asked to avoid the area and any places closed off with police tape.
