In a news release, the province’s police watchdog confirmed the shooting took place after officers responded to a domestic-related call around 12:30 a.m. involving a man who had left a home with a firearm in the area of Perran Drive and Paula Court.

The SIU say officers later located the man near Fifth Line West and Dundas Street, where an exchange of gunfire took place.

According to investigators, four officers discharged their firearms during the encounter. The man was struck multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Peel Regional Police previously confirmed that no officers were injured and that there are no outstanding suspects.

Investigators also said multiple firearms were recovered following the incident and indicated the man was not legally authorized to possess firearms.

The SIU, Ontario’s civilian agency responsible for investigating incidents involving police that result in death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault, has invoked its mandate and is leading the investigation.

The agency says investigators will review body-worn camera footage, in-car police video and any available surveillance footage from nearby homes and will speak with witnesses as part of the investigation.

There will be a large police presence in the area and residents are being asked to avoid the scene while evidence is collected.
