GSPS used CCTV footage and automated licence plate recognition to track down 55-year-old man, who was arrested Friday afternoon

A 55-year-old Sudbury man who allegedly fled the scene of a fatal pedestrian on Friday has been arrested and charged.

In an update on Saturday, Greater Sudbury Police said investigators used a mix of CCTV footage and automated licence plate recognition software to identify the vehicle involved in the incident, which left a 46-year-old woman dead.

The man was arrested at his home on Friday.

The collision occurred just before 7 a.m. on Feb. 27 in the area of the apartment complex at 1720 Paris Street.

Police said the woman was struck in the northbound lane of Paris by a driver who subsequently fled the scene.

First responders attempted life saving measures, GSPS said, but unfortunately, the 46-year-old woman was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her name has not been released as per her family’s wishes.

“Our deepest condolences are extended to her family and friends,” GSPS said Friday. “Her name will not be released out of respect for his family’s wishes.”

Today, police said “investigators reviewed CCTV footage and used Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology to identify the vehicle involved in the collision. Officers subsequently executed a search warrant at the registered owner’s residence, where the driver was identified.”

Arrested just after 5 p.m. on Feb. 27, the man is charged with failure to stop after an accident causing death.

“His name cannot be released at this time as the information has not yet been sworn to through the court process,” police said. “The vehicle has been seized and will undergo forensic and mechanical examinations.”

The man was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court in Sudbury on April 29 to answer to the charge.
