It’s reported artificial turf is more expense to install, but cheaper to maintain

The construction of a new soccer field is being considered for the Regional District of Nanaimo, B.C., prompting a discussion as to whether it should have a natural grass or artificial turf surface.

CHEK News reports the thought behind natural turf is that it is more expensive to maintain in the long run, with estimates of $50,000 annually. Artificial turf, although more expensive to install at about $1 million, would cost about $1,000 a year to maintain, it’s reported.

The parks and open space advisory committee director said current fields are being overused. She added climate change poses a challenge, suggesting water will become more of an issue, which favours the construction of a synthetic field. But she said the expense of such a project is a hurdle.

A feasibility study will be presented to the public for input.
