And Peel Regional Police are asking the public for help in solving what they believe was the murder of the 38-year-old.

Investigators, however, have not indicated they have located her remains.

What they do say is the Mississauga woman — who was sometimes known as Sarah — has not been seen or heard from since 2022.

And she was not known to be unaccounted until three years after that.

“She was reported missing to Peel Regional Police in June 2025 by family members in Afghanistan who had been unable to reach her for an extended period,” police said Monday.

Sarah has been in the news before

This is not the first time Mezhgan Aini has had her name in the news.

In 2017, there were many headlines surrounding an alleged assault on her at the Queens, New York, home where she and her husband Mohammad Yama Aini were raising their three children.

The New York Post reported that her husband — an Afghan diplomat at the United Nations — drove her to the hospital to be treated for “hair pulling” and being “punched” in her in face causing “swelling, pain and redness on her right eye.”

Neighbours described her to the Post as “quiet” and always seen wearing a “burka.”

There are no reports of charges filed in New York but the Post reported there could have been ramifications for the alleged attacker back in Afghanistan.

It’s unclear when Mezhgan Aini came to Canada or if she was accompanied by her husband and children. What police here do say is she lived in the area of Queen Frederica Dr. and Dundas St. E. in Mississauga, and that is the location where Peel cops are seeking the public’s assistance.

What did they see? What did they notice?

“Investigators are asking anyone who observed suspicious activity in the area of her residence between June 2022 and September 2022, who has not yet spoken with police, or who has information about Aini or her family, to come forward,” say Peel police.

Peel has seen honour killings

Detectives are not tipping their hand on what they believe may have happened but they have expertise in investigating cases of “honour” killings, which are cross overs of cultural and religious taboos that, sadly, make their way into Canada.

Peel has investigated two famous cases like this before that resulted in charges laid within the victims’ own family. Poonan Litt was one and Aqsa Parvez was the other. Parvez was just 16 when she was murdered. Her father and brother were found guilty.

Litt was 27 when she was stabbed to death. Her sister-in-law was found guilty in her murder.

Time will tell what happens in the case of missing Mezhgan Aini.

And while there are many unknowns, police now believe she was victim of a slaying.
