They are already calling him Captain Canada, and why not? He is one of our country’s best when it comes to hitting a baseball.

Josh Naylor, the product of Mississauga’s minor baseball system and current slugger for the Seattle Mariners, has been named Canada’s team captain for the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

The 28-year-old unveiled the jersey the Canadian squad will wear at the tournament — complete with the letter “C” for captain — on the eve of the international competition that will determine which country reigns supreme in baseball.

Twenty teams will take part in this year’s tournament with games to be held in Miami, Houston, San Juan and Tokyo.

Mississauga’s Josh Naylor has been named captain for Team Canada at the World Baseball Classic.

The graduate of St. Joan of Arc Secondary School in Mississauga and 2015 first-round draft pick of the Miami Marlins had a stellar year in 2025 when he hit 20 home runs, had 92 RBI, batted .295, and stole 30 bases. His success at the plate was rewarded with a $92.5 million contract that will keep him in Seattle for the next five years.

His successful season also earned him the Tip O’Neill Award by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Naylor’s second time of achieving the honour.

When he suits up for Canada’s first game against Colombia on March 7, it will mark the second time he has played for his country, the first coming in 2017 when he played in two tournament games.
