While it came in exhibition play, Portugal picked up a massive victory over Spain ahead of EuroBasket 2025. Celtics big man Neemias Queta played a huge part in the victory as he finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. He also had the game-sealing reverse dunk with 3.8 seconds left in the game.
Queta had offseason knee surgery right after the Celtics lost to the Knicks in the playoffs. So it’s a good sign that Queta is already back on the court and contributing for Portugal as he looks ready to go for international competition.
Portugal is part of Group A in the preliminary round of EuroBasket 2025, so it’ll play Estonia, Latvia, Turkey, Serbia and the Czech Republic. Notably, Queta and Portugal will face former C’s big man Kristaps Porzingis and Latvia on Sept. 1. Portugal’s victory over Spain still marks a huge moment as Queta and his team are looking to make some noise.
Queta is the lone current Celtics player who will be a part of the EuroBasket tournament. That’s for now, at least, as the front office has continued to make tweaks to the roster, most recently after trading away Georges Niang.
Queta is set to be an important part of the Celtics next season as he could be a starter at center. The C’s did make a depth add in the form of Chris Boucher, but regardless, Queta figures to see minutes next season. So all the added reps as part of EuroBasket could also be beneficial ahead of training camp.
