The product of Bloomfield, Conn., just went home and kept in shape, while keeping in touch with teammates he’d gotten to know so well in such a short time.

“Always being overly prepared,” is how Lawson put it. “If you’re always ready, you never gotta get ready.”

Just days after the Bombers brought him back, the 25-year-old defensive back appears on the verge of getting into the lineup in Calgary on Saturday.

An injury to Jamal Parker has caused a shuffle in the secondary, Lawson getting the call he was hoping would come his way.

The call from Winnipeg came just as he’d finished a two-week stint with the Massachusetts Pirates of the Arena League.

“The season ended on a Friday, got called here on the Sunday,” he said. “It was perfect timing. Everything worked out exactly how it was supposed to.”

Lawson doesn’t spend much time wondering why it wasn’t perfect back in June.

He lives in the present. His motto: “Be where my feet are.”

Those feet were in Hamilton the last two seasons, where he played 13 games, made 45 tackles and picked off a pass.

Playing corner and halfback, he felt he picked up the Canadian game well enough to impress some people.

He’s confident in his instincts and ability to break on the ball, too, something head coach Mike O’Shea took note of this week.

All of that is why Lawson didn’t fret his Canadian career might be over.

‘Just something about this one’: Not just another week for Blue Bombers

“Never,” he said. “The past few years in the league I put together a decent amount of tape where I can add value to whatever team I am part of.”

Joining his current one in camp, he felt at home right away.

“Since Day 1 it’s just been like family, and the team camaraderie — everybody is just together,” Lawson said. “Everybody welcomed me with open arms. And not just inside the locker-room. In the community, we go out for dinners as if we’ve been together for the past few years. Even though I just got here.”

The Stampeders will be acutely aware just how green Lawson is to the Blue and Gold.

With elusive quarterback Vernon Adams expected back at the Calgary controls after missing a game with a head injury, Saturday’s season debut won’t be a walk in the park for the 5-foot-9, 190-pounder.

Defenders can’t relax when Adams starts running around.

“It’s important for us to make sure we stay locked on our guys,” Lawson said. “We’ve got to cover for a little bit longer, which is fine. Especially in the CFL. The field is so big they always find different ways to squeeze away from you. That’s why we get paid, too.”

Lawson hopes to be cashing cheques in Winnipeg for a while.

O’Shea says the Bombers were fortunate he was available, and the feeling is mutual.

“I’m excited,” Lawson said. “Just take advantage of my opportunity and let the game come to me, and not put too much emotion into it.”
