NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central women’s tennis swept the weekly awards from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, as Alejandra Hidalgo Vega was named Player of the Week and Sara Barbaric earned Rookie of the Week honors.

The Eagles competed in three matches last week, including a Feb. 24 matchup against No. 3 North Carolina. In that contest, Hidalgo Vega faced the nation’s sixth-ranked player, Oby Kajuru, and pushed her in a competitive first set. The senior later rebounded with back-to-back 6-1 sets in a victory over Barton’s Irma Granstam.

Barbaric was the final match to finish against UNC Asheville on Feb. 27, battling through two tiebreakers after dropping the first set at No. 4 singles to Maria Sol Alverez. The freshman secured the victory with a 7-5 set tiebreak and a 12-10 match tiebreak.

NC Central returns to action Friday, March 6, at Wofford. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.
