It appears that the Calgary Flames are trading yet another prominent defender.
Though nothing has been completed just yet, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman is reporting that the Flames and Utah Mammoth are nearing a trade involving defenceman MacKenzie Weegar. The 31-year-old will have to agree to the deal as he carries a full no-trade clause.

Should this trade go through, it’s a rather unexpected move by the Flames.
Though there had been some whispers surrounding Weegar in recent weeks, the fact that he is under contract through the 2030-31 season had most expecting he would remain in Calgary for years to come. He’s been a member of the Flames since being acquired alongside Jonathan Huberdeau in the blockbuster Matthew Tkachuk trade made with the Florida Panthers following the 2021-22 season.
Weegar has become a household name since joining the Flames, often regarded as one of the better blueliners in the NHL. That said, he has struggled immensely this season.
After recording north of 45 points in each of the prior two seasons, Weegar has managed just three goals and 21 points through 60 games. Even more concerning is his league-worst plus-minus (-35).
What would make this deal all the more fascinating is that the Flames already moved out one of their top right-shot defenceman in Rasmus Andersson in mid January. They were able to bring Zach Whitecloud back in that deal, but not having both Andersson and Weegar further depletes what was already a weak blueline.
What Flames fans will like, however, is that it would mean plenty more playing time for Zayne Parekh, who many feel has been underutilized by head coach Ryan Huska. It would also seemingly indicate that Hunter Brzustewicz gets recalled from the Calgary Wranglers.
Though things can change in an instant in the NHL, fans may have seen Weegar in a Flames sweater for the final time on Tuesday night.
