Funding goes to causes the couple championed throughout their lives, including healthcare, sports, arts programs, and community service organizations across Norfolk County.

“My parents loved their community and believed strongly in supporting a wide range of service groups, sports teams, arts programs, and, of course, Norfolk General Hospital,” said Derek Demeyere, steward of the fund. “When they passed in 2015, their friends and family came together to create and fund the Demeyere Family Fund through the Norfolk Community Foundation. This fund has allowed their legacy of giving to continue for the past 10 years and will continue giving for many more.”

The portable X-ray machine will improve patient care and diagnostic capabilities at the Simcoe-based hospital, bringing critical medical technology directly to patients who need it most, said a media release.

“The Demeyere family has a long history of supporting the hospital, the foundation, and many other causes in our community,” said Sarah Muntz-Flowerday, executive director of the Norfolk General Hospital Foundation. “As a result of their involvement in Norfolk, Doug and Starr’s passing was felt throughout the community. It is amazing that their legacy of giving is able to continue through the Norfolk Community Foundation.”

The Demeyere Fund stands as a powerful example of what community foundations accomplish, said the release.

“The Doug & Starr Demeyere Fund represents everything we celebrate as Norfolk Community Foundation enters our 40th year,” said Josh Parsons, Executive Director of Norfolk Community Foundation. “For a decade, this fund has turned Doug and Starr’s values into action year after year, supporting the causes they cared about most. This is the promise of community foundations: your generosity doesn’t end with your lifetime. It becomes a permanent source of good in your community, supporting the causes and organizations that matter to you, forever.

“As we celebrate 40 years of connecting generosity with community need, funds like the Demeyere Fund show us what’s possible when vision meets stewardship.”

The fund is one of many managed by Norfolk Community Foundation.

The foundation will mark its 40th year with events, storytelling initiatives, and a renewed focus on building legacy funds.
