Boston Red Sox fans are well acquainted with New York Yankees 25-year-old right-hander Cam Schlittler. The Massachusetts native delivered a masterclass outing in the decisive Game 3 of last season’s ALWC, in which the Yankees ended the Red Sox’s season. Schlittler’s also been known to get into it with Red Sox fans on social media.

We’ve turned the leaf on a new MLB season, and Schlittler remains a serious threat in the American League East. He made his spring training debut on Friday and showed off a 99.4 fastball against his first batter of the day, whom he struck out on three pitches.

According to The New York Post’s Greg Joyce, Schlittler’s heater averaged 98.7 mph in the outing, which featured 39 pitches in total from Schlittler.

As he’s been battling some back soreness this spring, the Yankees have taken things easy with Schlittler to start camp, although he’s expected to be on schedule for the first week of the season and make an initial start on something like a 65-80 pitch count.

Joyce noted that Schlittler’s four-seam fastball — which doomed the Red Sox in October — wasn’t even his most notable pitch on Friday.

“The pitch that may have jumped out the most Friday was Schlittler’s cutter, which he used to strike out a pair of batters,” Joyce wrote. “The pitch peaked at 96.5 mph and averaged 94.9 mph, up noticeably from the 91.9 mph it averaged last season.”
