SARTELL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men’s tennis team improved to 2-1 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play with a 6-1 victory over Saint John’s University on Sunday at Sta-Fit.

In its first MIAC match in over three weeks, St. Olaf (3-4, 2-1 MIAC) took the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles and went on to win five of the six singles matches to top Saint John’s (0-3, 0-3 MIAC). The win was the third in a row in the series for the Oles after the Johnnies won seven in a row from 2016-23.

St. Olaf got out to a 1-0 lead after doubles thanks to wins from the pairs of sophomore Lou Smith and junior Marjan Veldic and sophomores Daniel Meunier and Mason Ramirez, who both picked up their first victories of the season as pairings. Smith and Veldic recorded a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles, while Meunier and Ramirez registered a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles to offset the Johnnies’ 6-3 win atop the lineup.

Vizoli, Veldic, and Smith all lost four games or fewer in their straight-set victories at the top-three singles spots, with Vizoli improving to 3-0 in conference play at No. 1 singles with his 6-4, 6-0 win. Sophomore Jacob Schultz also got to 3-0 in the MIAC with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at No. 6 singles, while sophomore Madden Vanderwerf fought back from dropping the first set in a 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-8) victory at No. 4 singles.

St. Olaf is slated to play its first home outdoor match against Saint Mary’s University at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 14 at Carlson Courts.
