It’s time to dig into this week’s Letters to the Editor. Want to join in the fun? Details about how to reach out are at the bottom of the article. The Oilers blew the deadline
Small sample size, but the initial return from going all-in at the trade deadline yet again is disastrous. No needle change, no improvement. A team far from competitive with contenders.
Is the problem team defence, defencemen or goaltending? It seems to me that the answer is yes. Just as it was last week.
What was Stan Bowman thinking by going all in with this team? Did Bowman think a third-pair defenceman from a weak team, a penalty kill specialist and a fourth-liner from a weak team were going to move the needle enough to turn this team into a contender?
It is understandable for fans to have unrealistic evaluations of their team. But management cannot fall prey to this. Relying on an old adage such as “any time you have McDavid and Draisaitl on your team you must go for it” rather than evaluating your team as it is, is a recipe for disaster.
Unfortunately, going all in yet again this year delays any improvement of the team by the usual draft and develop pipeline into the 2030s.
I don’t think McDavid or Draisaitl or anyone else on the team is blind to where the team is heading. Draisaitl expressed his thoughts on this just before the Olympic break. What comes next is troubling.

Hope Will Never Die
What I have struggled with lately is the immense amount of negativity produced by almost every aspect of the Oilers fanbase. Whether it be the goalies, the defence, specific players, and more recently directed at the head coach. While it is completely understandable, I find myself yearning for the hope we felt during the 16 game winning streak 2023. The hope we felt after Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final. The hope during Pickards winning streak in the 2025 playoffs. I miss how we felt that our leadership could pull the best out of this group even during the down swings.
Losing two Stanley Cup Finals and a Gold Medal game has to have taken a toll on McDavid, and us Oilers fans especially.
So my question is, how do we find hope in the last 19 games? Even in the worst case scenario. I’m begging the organization that coined “Hope Will Never Die” to show me some light. Because I don’t see any right now.

Looking to July…
The trade deadline is over and we are hopefully gearing up for another playoff run
Let’s just get straight to July 1 because we are Oilers fans.
They need a top-six forward or a third-line centre, depending on where they play Nugent-Hopkins, some help on the right side of the D core and the way things are going probably a goalie. (Tristian Jarry I hope your listening and make me put my foot in my mouth).
Who are realistic trade options to fill those needs or free agents? You’re Stan Bowman. What say you?

(It’s going to be hard to trust any July 1 signing after the last two summers.)
