RCMP in Whitehorse are investigating an assault with a weapon at the Mount Sima ski hill, after they say a man was stabbed on Sunday afternoon.
Officers received a report shortly after 3 p.m. that a 19-year-old man “had been stabbed in the abdomen while on the mountain,” RCMP stated in a news release.
Police did not release any information about the 19-year-old’s condition.
One person is in custody. Police did not release any information about that person, including age or gender.
“This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Police do not believe there is any risk to the public,” RCMP said in the news release, which was issued shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday.
It added, “Based on the information gathered so far, police believe this to be an isolated incident with no connection to the Arctic Winter Games or athletes.”
Mount Sima is located just south of Whitehorse. A long lineup of vehicles could be seen exiting the hill on Sunday afternoon, with police officers speaking with the occupants of each vehicle.
Tom Luxemburger, board president of the Friends of Mount Sima Society, which runs the ski hill, confirmed that RCMP officers were stopping vehicles to ask patrons what they had seen.
“Our primary concern is always the safety and well-being of our community members, and we are grateful for the professionalism and swift action of all first responders and ski patrol,” Luxemburger said, reading from a prepared statement.
“We are working closely with the RCMP to understand the details of the incident. And we’ll continue to assess our protocols to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.”
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information about what happened to phone Whitehorse RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
