A Mississauga man hunted by police on a Canada-wide warrant in connection with a murder earlier this year has been arrested in northeastern Ontario.

York Regional Police said on Monday that Jacob Wallace, 19, was arrested this past Thursday in Moosonee, about 1,000 kilometres north of the Greater Toronto Area.

He’s charged with first-degree murder in connection with the Jan. 26 slaying of Sergio Lopes, 65, of Richmond Hill. Lopes was gunned down outside a plaza near Winges Road and Rowntree Dairy Road in Vaughan at around 1 p.m., police said.

After arriving on the scene, officers found the victim in front of a business suffering from “multiple gunshot wounds.” The man was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

Officers with the James Bay detachment of Ontario Provincial Police located and arrested Wallace on March 5, York police said in a news release.

Police said members of the public also helped locate the wanted man, one of two suspects sought in connection with the slaying.

Isaiah Thomas Badger, 19, of Edmonton, remains on the loose and is also being sought on a Canada-wide warrant for first-degree murder in connection with Lopes’ death, according to investigators.

Police say Badger is considered to be “armed and dangerous.” Anyone who spots him should not approach him, but call police instead.

Anyone with information is urged to call the York Regional Police homicide squad at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7865, or email [email protected]. Anonymous tips can be called in to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Badger is also wanted by Toronto Police in connection with the Feb. 7 murder of Chandan Kumar Raja Nandakumar, 37, of Brampton. He was killed in the parking lot of Woodbine Mall, at Rexdale Boulevard and Highway 27.

Police in both York and Toronto said earlier that in both cases the victims were targeted, but a link between the two killings and motive have not been established.
