In recent years, Geno Smith has revived his career, going from journeyman backup to solid starter in the NFL.

Smith was once a highly-regarded quarterback prospect out of West Virginia in 2013, but has since had a roller coaster path in the league. The veteran has produced one of the more impressive late-career revivals in recent memory, earning the respect of many across the league.

While Smith is entering the twilight of his career, he is still earning starter opportunities for teams looking for competent quarterback play. Here’s a look at all the teams Smith has joined in the NFL.

Geno Smith teams timeline2013-2016: New York Jets

The Jets drafted Geno Smith with the 39th pick of the 2013 NFL draft, which began a rocky four years for the quarterback. Smith was named the Week 1 starter as a rookie after Mark Sanchez’s season-ending injury, and the team won eight games despite Smith throwing 21 interceptions. The following year, though, Smith’s Jets went 4-12, and the entire regime was fired after the season ended.

Smith entered training camp in 2015 as the incumbent starter, but he was sidelined after breaking his jaw in a locker room fight. Ryan Fitzpatrick took over and delivered one of the best seasons in Jets history, keeping Smith as a backup for the entire year.

In 2016, Fitzpatrick was the starter but struggled, paving the way for Smith to take over midseason. However, Smith tore his ACL, ending his initial time in New York.

2017: New York Giants

Smith remained in New York in 2017 when he signed a one-year deal with the Giants to backup Eli Manning. The quarterback’s most notable moment came when head coach Ben McAdoo benched Manning to start Smith against the Raiders, ending Manning’s consecutive starts streak at 210. The Giants lost, McAdoo was fired after the game and Smith was relegated to the bench after one start.

2018: Los Angeles Chargers

In 2018, Smith joined the Los Angeles Chargers on a one-year deal to backup Philip Rivers. Smith appeared in five games, all in relief of Rivers, while the Chargers went 12-4 and made the playoffs.

2019-2024: Seattle Seahawks

As a free agent for a third-straight season, Smith signed with the Seattle Seahawks in 2019 to backup Russell Wilson. This time, despite not playing at all in 2019, Smith made enough of an impression to return to Seattle on two-consecutive one-year deals.

When the Seahawks traded Wilson to the Denver Broncos in 2022, Smith won the quarterback competition against Drew Lock to start Week 1. What followed was a resurgent season, as Smith produced career-high touchdowns and over 4,000 passing yards to help lead the Seahawks back to the playoffs.

Smith remained Seattle’s starter for three seasons from 2022 to 2024. In that span, Smith produced 71 touchdowns, over 12,000 receiving yards and a completion percentage just under 70 percent. He successfully revived his career by helping the team move on from Wilson.

2025: Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders traded for Geno Smith in 2025 when Seattle chose to move on and go with Sam Darnold instead. Las Vegas reunited Smith with Pete Carroll, who was his head coach from 2019 to 2023, as the team was hoping to make a leap.

Instead, the Raiders were the worst team in the NFL in 2025, as Smith, Carroll and the Raiders all struggled mightily. Carroll was fired after the year, while Smith would be traded after the season.
