Newly acquired Maple Leafs forward Nicolas Roy has publicly addressed his trade to Toronto and how close he believes the team is to winning a Stanley Cup.
The Maple Leafs may not be any better or any worse than last season, but they’re certainly going to be different, which is what the goal was coming into this summer.
Roy was a guest on Leafs Morning Take this week and shared that while he was shocked to be traded, he is glad to be joining a contender like the Maple Leafs.
“[I was] really surprised to be honest. I wasn’t expecting to be traded this summer… but I’m really excited to be joining a team who is trying to win right now, that was the most important thing. But, also, a Canadian team, a different experience, great city, great organization, so I’m excited.”
Roy confirmed that he has spoken with Leafs coach Craig Berube, and he’s also impressed by the work that the Leafs have done this summer to become a lot more difficult to play against.
“You look at the guys they brought [in], they want to play with a little more grit, I guess, in the playoffs, more physicality, and I think they did a really good job this year, just watching it compared to the last couple of years. Like I said previously, they were the biggest challenge to Florida in 7 games. The guys were physical and I think that the team is going in the right direction.”
As far as what he thinks of the team’s chances to actually compete for a Stanley Cup, Roy believes that his new group is close to accomplishing the ultimate goal.
“The team is really close, I think… Like I said [earlier], pressure is a privilege. There’s going to be ups and downs… try not to be too high or too low, but like I said, it’s doesn’t take that much more. The team was really close last year, so a little bit more and we all believe it can happen.”
Roy won a Cup with Vegas in 2003 and knows what it takes to get the job done in the postseason. That sort of experience will be invaluable to this team next spring when the most meaningful games begin.
Roy still has a month or so of summer left to enjoy before training camp kicks off in the middle of September, but you can rest assured after the comments he made this week that he plans to put his best foot forward in his first season in Toronto.
