The Maple Leafs recalled the 26-year-old forward from their American Hockey League affiliate and he was in the lineup in Montreal against the Canadiens on Tuesday night at the Bell Centre.

Leafs coach Craig Berube in the morning wouldn’t confirm that Groulx would play, but in the pre-game warmup, Groulx was between Easton Cowan and Nick Robertson on the Leafs’ third line.
“We want to see guys and see what they’re all about,” Berube told media in Montreal. “He has had a very good year down in the minors. Very intelligent player.”
Groulx indicated he would be ready for his Leafs debut.
“I’m not too sure I’m in the lineup yet, but if I’m in, it would be a very special moment,” Groulx told media after Toronto’s optional morning skate. “I might have some friends and family coming over. I know a lot of people from Montreal. If I get a chance to be in, it would be a good moment for sure.

“I have to focus on my speed. It’s probably my biggest asset. Defensively, I think I’m reliable.”
Calle Jarnkrok was scratched. Jarnkrok will be an unrestricted free agent this summer and there’s no reason why he should be in the lineup unless there are injuries.
Leafs need a spark
Riding a seven-game losing streak (0-5-2) since National Hockey League games resumed following the break for the Winter Olympics, the Leafs could use anything approaching a spark. In just one of those games have the Leafs scored more than two goals.
It’s not about trying to climb back into the race for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, as the Leafs were in last place in the Atlantic Division and were 11 points behind the Boston Bruins for the second wild-card spot. It’s about getting some life from any source and Groulx could provide that.

Not only does Groulx lead the Marlies in scoring with 50 points in 57 games, he’s tied for third in goals in the AHL with 27.
Signed to a two-year contract by the Leafs last summer, Groulx has played in 65 NHL games — all with the Anaheim Ducks in parts of three seasons — scoring one goal and recording four assists.

Groulx is wearing No. 29 for the Leafs.
Joseph Woll got the start in goal against the Canadiens.
William Nylander, meanwhile, told media it’s hard to stay optimistic.
What if someone had told him last fall the Leafs would be in such a bad place in the standings come March 10?
“I wouldn’t have believed them,” Nylander said.
