A search of a vehicle as it left the U.S. and entered Canada uncovered 67 grams of opium and has led to charges against a Brampton man.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Estevan RCMP discovered the drugs at the North Portal point of entry in western Canada.

The border crossing connects the City of Portal, North Dakota, with the Village of North Portal in Saskatchewan.

“The CBSA conducted a search on March 4 and discovered 67 grams of opium in the possession of a man attempting to enter Canada at the North Portal port of entry. The Estevan RCMP were then contacted to continue the criminal investigation,” according to the CBSA.

As a result of the investigation, 53-year-old Iqbal Kahlon of Brampton was charged with unlawfully importing a Schedule I substance and smuggling goods into Canada.

He is scheduled to appear in Estevan Provincial Court on March 20.
