A man in his 30s has been arrested in connection with a murder at a depanneur in the Plateau Mont-Royal on Thursday.

The suspect was handcuffed inside the Desjardins Complex. He was then taken to the hospital to be treated for a deep cut on his hand.

According to Montreal police (SPVM), emergency responders attempted to assist the victim, a man in his 50s, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was reportedly stabbed multiple times.

The alleged crime happened around 7:30 a.m. at a depanneur near the intersection of Gilford and Berri streets, next to the Laurier metro station.

Investigators are working to determine what happened.

The suspect is scheduled to be questioned later today.

Montrealers in the area expressed shock and sadness at the violence that unfolded in their community.

“I’ve been coming to this dep for many, many years,” said one community member. “I mean, it’s scary. It’s unusual for this area. I’ve always felt really safe living in this area, and I’m very confused.”

“I don’t know what’s happening to Montreal,” added another. “But it’s painful to myself. It feels like a stab in my heart.”

“It’s a neighbourhood I frequent, I pass through here every day,” said another. “It’s a bit confusing.”
