A Vancouver Canucks prospect will reportedly be traded in the OHL at some point in the near future, with the 19-year-old gearing up for Rookie Camp in BC next month.

The Vancouver Canucks have had a number of their prospects suit up in the Ontario Hockey League in recent years including three last season – Anthony Romani & Riley Patterson with the Barrie Colts, while Vilmer Alriksson with the Brampton Steelheads, along with another three the club just drafted in late June – Aleksei Medvedev, Kieren Dervin and Gabe Chiarot.

With the OHL’s 2025-26 season set to begin in six weeks and their trade window opening back up on Tuesday, teams are expected to be quite active leading up to training camp later this month and a Vancouver Canucks prospect could be finding himself with a new team by the time the puck drops in September.

Vancouver Canucks prospect could be on the move in the OHL

Entering the 2025-26 campaign, Riley Patterson, Aleksei Medvedev, Kieren Dervin and Gabe Chiarot are the only Vancouver Canucks prospects remaining in the OHL following the departures of Anthony Romani and Vilmer Alriksson to the NCAA and Abbotsford (AHL), respectively.

As contending teams around the OHL look to stock up ahead of a potential run to the Final next spring, it appears that one of those Vancouver Canucks prospects may be on the move.

Nothing is finalized at the time of writing this, nor is it guaranteed, but according to Ryan McArthur, he’s hearing that the Barrie Colts will be trading Riley Patterson.

“Hearing that NCAA is NOT an option for Kashawn Aitcheson. Sounds like he will be back in Barrie this year. Also, it’s looking like Riley Patterson will be traded. Neither scenario is guaranteed, but this is what I’m hearing.” McArthur said.

The news comes as a bit of a shock given that the Barrie Colts are expected to be one of the top teams once again this coming season, likely competition with the Brantford Bulldogs for the Eastern Conference title.

With several of their NHL drafted prospects set to return this season including Kashawn Aitcheson, Cole Beaudoin, Emil Hemming, Gabriel Eliasson and possibly Tristen Bertucci too, it doesn’t make a ton of sense for the Colts to move on from Patterson, if a trade does materialize in the weeks aheadThe 19-year-old was Vancouver’s fourth round pick in 2024 and he had a pretty good D+1 year with the Colts, putting up 59 points (25 goals, 34 assists) in 64 games, along with 12 points in 16 playoff contests, helping Barrie reach the Eastern Conference Final.

We’ll have to wait and see what happens on the Riley Patterson front over the next little while, but if the Colts do end up moving him, they may come to regret that decision later in the season.
