As March break begins, some flights at Toronto Pearson Airport in Mississauga are delayed due to the snowy weather on Friday, officials say.

NAV Canada, the not-for-profit organization responsible for air traffic control at Pearson and other airports across the country, said on Friday afternoon that travellers should expect delays and, if possible, call ahead before heading to the airport.

“Delays affecting some flights (at Toronto Pearson Airport) due to weather,” NAV Canada said in a post to social media. “Our team is moving aircraft safely and as quickly as possible.”

Officials added passengers should check the status of their flights with airlines ahead of time.

Early Friday morning, a snowfall warning was issued for parts of the Greater Toronto Area with “heavy bursts” of snow expected late in the morning.

For Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton, snowfall rates were predicted to reach two to four centimetres per hour, with total accumulations expected to reach five to eight centimetres before the system moves out.

With March break running next Monday through Friday, Toronto Pearson Airport officials said earlier this week it’s among the busiest times of year for air travel.

Some 1.7 million travellers are expected to use Canada’s biggest and busiest airport between March 12 and March 22, around 400,000 more than the same period last year.
