A brand new speakeasy has just opened in downtown Calgary, offering a spot for classic cocktails and bites in the heart of the city.
Taking over the space that was previously home to the nightclub Please Don’t Tell, L’Apres is a more low-key but no less impressive affair. Thank martinis in low lighting rather than dancing the night away.
It’s very much a speakeasy in the traditional sense. To enter, you’ll head through what seems to be a cafe at 811 1st St. SW, heading down to the back of the room and down the stairs, where you’ll be greeted by photos of some jazz legends. However, which one leads to L’Apres, we’ll let you find out for yourself.

Once you make your way into the speakeasy, expect dim and moody lighting, vintage French-inspired artwork and trinkets adorning the walls, and mid-century looking furniture. It feels like stepping back in time.
There’s even a large grand piano up on the stage to the side and a large bar with backlit stained glass as the focal point of the room.
What we ordered
After getting settled in our seats, it was time to check out what L’Apres has to offer. No visit to a speakeasy is complete without a cocktail, and we opted for a classic French 75, which really lent itself to the vibe of the room.

The spot also offers a few snacks to enjoy while you soak in the atmosphere. First up, we tried The Snitch, beef dumplings, served with soy, ginger, chilli, sesame and scallion. The flavours were very traditional, and the saltiness was great paired with a drink.

We also tried the Gangster Dip, a super cheesy dip with bacon and whisky, served with toast. This one will be a favourite for cheese lovers out there.

If you’re looking to check out L’Apres, the spot is open Sunday through Saturday (if you can find it).
