Ottawa Senators

The Senators have recalled defenceman Lassi Thomson from the AHL’s Belleville Senators, it was announced Saturday morning.

He will be with the team for their two-game homestand this weekend, beginning Saturday afternoon against the Anaheim Ducks.

The move comes with Ottawa thin on the blueline as defencemen Jake Sanderson and Nick Jensen will miss both games this weekend with injury.

Sanderson is set to miss multiple weeks while Jensen “will be re-evaluated on a daily basis” according to head coach Travis Green.

Dennis Gilbert is in, Nick Jensen is out on defense. Jensen also won’t play Sunday vs San Jose.

TSN’s Claire Hanna reports Dennis Gilbert will draw in for Jensen on the back end. Linus Ullmark will start in net on Saturday.

Thomson has 14 goals and 25 points in 55 AHL games this year with Belleville. He has not yet played a game at the NHL level this season.

Montreal Canadiens

The Canadiens are getting forward Cole Caufield back Saturday against the San Jose Sharks, while forward Brendan Gallagher will be a healthy scratch.

Caufield missed Wednesday’s game against the Ottawa Senators because of an illness.

Gallagher, 33, has gone without a point in each of his last four games and saw his ice time dip to a team-low 8:48 Wednesday against Ottawa. Gallagher has one point in his previous seven games and 20 points in 64 games this season.

Head coach Martin St. Louis said scratching the 14-year veteran was a tough choice to make.

“It’s hard. There’s nothing that prepares you for these kinds of decisions, discussions, but as a leader, you have to take them and make it.”

St. Louis added that Gallagher will return to the lineup Sunday against the Anaheim Ducks.

Gallagher was in his usual spot on the fourth line Friday at Habs practice, but St. Louis did not guarantee the veteran forward would remain in the lineup this weekend.

“We have a deep group of forwards right now, and sometimes I have to make tough decisions,” said St. Louis via The Canadian Press when asked directly if Gallagher’s competitive edge was enough to keep him in the lineup. “Gally’s a pro. I know what Gally can bring, and we’re going to make decisions on a game-to-game basis.

“Every player on my team knows where they stand. I have plenty of conversations with everybody about where they’re standing. We’re going to make decisions that are best for the team.”

Here are the team’s expected lines for Saturday night, according to TSN’s Kenzie Lalonde:

Caufield – Suzuki – Slafkovsky

Newhook-Kapanen-Demidov

Bolduc-Evans-Dach

Anderson-Danault-Texier

Matheson- Dobson

Guhle – Hutson

Panthers head coach Paul Maurice issued several injury updates when speaking with reporters Saturday ahead of their four-game western road trip, which begins Sunday afternoon in Seattle against the Kraken.

Maurice said via team reporter Jameson Olive that forward Sam Reinhart isn’t travelling with the team due to multiple injuries he’s been playing through. Forward Sam Bennett is currently considered day-to-day but is expected to play at some point during the trip.

Full updates from Maurice:

– Reinhart not traveling
– Bennett is day to day, expected to play on trip
– Verhaeghe & Lundell are back tomorrow
– Jones should return on trip
– “Hopeful” that Balinskis plays on trip

Maurice added he is “hopeful” defenceman Uvis Balinskis plays over the next four games and forward Jonah Gadjovich is travelling with the team, but Maurice is not sure if he will play.

Meanwhile, forward Brad Marchand remains out with a lower-body injury and Maurice didn’t have much when asked about his status.

“Don’t have an answer for you on [Marchand],” Maurice said via Olive. “There’s doctors, a bunch of really smart guys, looking at him to figure out what it is and the best way to proceed.”

The Panthers have won three games in a row and sit nine points back of the East’s final wild-card spot.

Buffalo Sabres

Forward Alex Tuch will likely be able to play Saturday against the Toronto Maple Leafs, head coach Lindy Ruff said via TSN’s Mark Masters.

Tuch missed Buffalo’s game against the Washington Capitals Thursday because of a lower-body injury.
