OVER 8,000 STUDENTS IN SURREY TO BENEFIT FROM ROAD SAFETY INITIATIVE
Posted on Monday 2nd March 2026 in Vision Zero

Collingwood Learning is proud to launch Split Second, a high-impact theatre and workshop programme designed to empower Year 7 students with life-saving road safety skills.
Split Second takes place this March and will be delivered to 40 schools across Surrey, reaching over 8,000 students.
Funded by Surrey RoadSafe as part of their strategy to eliminate all road deaths and serious injuries by 2050, Split Second aims to improve the safety of young people on our roads.

Split Second combines engaging theatrical performance with interactive workshops, creating a dynamic and thought-provoking experience for students. This innovative approach captures the enthusiasm and excitement of young people, bringing relatable characters and scenarios to life. The audience will see how a split-second decision can lead to life-changing consequences.
Through the performance and workshop, students gain:
Essential road safety knowledge, including observation techniques and strategies to manage distractions from technology or passengers.
Awareness of the devastating consequences of roadside collisions, from injury and loss of life through to the emotional impact on family, friends, and the wider community.
Insight into the influences shaping behaviour on the roads, including peer influence, parents, emotions and mood, and social media.
Skills to manage attitudes and behaviours and empower them to make healthy and safe choices for themselves and others.
Each session is delivered live by a team of professional actors. Following the theatre performance, students participate in an interactive workshop designed to deepen their understanding and reinforce key safety messages. Participating schools also receive a teachers’ resource pack to support follow-up lessons, ensuring the learning continues in the classroom.

Chris Simes, Managing Director at Collingwood Learning, said:
“We are delighted to partner with Surrey RoadSafe to deliver this important programme. At Collingwood Learning, we believe in the power of education to change lives. Split Second is more than just a road safety initiative; it’s about empowering young people to make better decisions, keep themselves safe, and create safer communities for everyone. We want to install lifelong habits that will contribute to Vision Zero’s goal of eliminating road deaths and serious injuries.”
Steve Bax, Deputy Cabinet Member for Highways at Surrey County Council, said: “I’m pleased that funding from Surrey RoadSafe has enabled us to deliver Theatre in Education to Year 7 in 40 schools this term.
Road safety is a top priority for Surrey County Council. We’re also investing in more cycle and walking routes throughout the county, introducing lower speed limits on rural roads, improving crossing points around schools and providing cycle training for both children and adults.
I’m sure that Theatre in Education will bring road safety to life in a way no leaflet or lecture ever could and that it will prove hugely beneficial to our young people.”
Split Second offers schools an exciting opportunity to engage their Year 7 students in life-saving education. Aligned with Surrey County Council’s Vision Zero strategy, this programme works toward the critical goal of eliminating all road fatalities and serious injuries by 2050.
