As we inch closer to the Canadian Football League season, many observers are analyzing each team’s offseason moves. At SportsCage.com, CFL on TSN analyst Glen Suitor has broken down each team’s coaching staff. Suitor is particularly impressed with what the Saskatchewan Roughriders have done.
“Corey Mace is going to do the big picture more and let Josh Bell take care of the defence. Corey has been calling defensive plays throughout his tenure in Saskatchewan and is now stepping away from that. I think that’s a good call in a lot of ways. He can still have tons of input even in games. Our game happens so quickly, the big picture and game management for a head coach is crucial.”
“I remember in a Zoom call with Corey, I asked him flat out, ‘Being a head coach for the first couple of years here, how has it pulled you? What has been the surprise?’ He said, ‘The amount that I have to do media and things like that, because when you’re just a coordinator, you lock yourself in your room. You’re doing film work, you’re doing game planning, practice planning, practice cards, all of it. And that consumes you from five in the morning until everyone’s left.”
“I think that (this move) allows him now in the practice scenario to go to different groups, look at the special teams a little bit more, walk over to the offence, see what they’re doing, how can I help with the O-line, things like that, but still have tons of input in the defence. He’s going to be able to step outside of the X’s and O’s and look at personnel.”
