The B.C. U18 girls rugby team enjoyed a resounding win over Ontario to capture the gold medal at the Vancouver Invitational Sevens tournament between March 4-6 at UBC.
The final was played at BC Place in front of over 40,000 fans enjoying a weekend of HSBC International Sevens. Three athletes from the Comox Valley were on the select squad of 13 players from around the province. Louie McKenzie, Chantelle Lambert and Charlotte Agnew who play for the Comox Valley Rapids and for G.P. Vanier were standouts in the tournament.
McKenzie and Lambert connected to score the final try that cemented the 20-0 win over Ontario. On the boys side Quinn Stuckey, Lucas Gonzalez, Marcus Contantino and Gray Watt represented BC at the same tournament earning fourth place in this highly competitive international tournament.
This annual event consists of three days of grassroots rugby sevens, with teams coming from the U.S., Yukon, Alberta, and Ontario. This year, fans and players faced soggy conditions throughout most of the tournament, but that did not dampen the audience’s enthusiasm or hinder the players’ intensity on the field.
The Vancouver Sevens Invitational aims to foster opportunities for competitive rugby in B.C. and Canada while inspiring young players, coaches, and officials alike in their commitment to the sport.
