In December, the WSO and the Ontario Gurdwaras Committee attended a town hall meeting with Peel Regional Police and Sikh community groups from Ontario and B.C. to address the rash of extortions and threats that have plagued the South Asian community for years.
The violent shakedowns have been an ongoing issue for police and residents in Caledon, Brampton and Mississauga, with the number of extortion-related crimes has spiking since 2020. There were some 490 cases reported in 2024, and more than 260 extortion-related charges laid by Peel police in 2025.
