There was plenty of hockey played in South Surrey and White Rock last weekend.
The second annual Scotiabank Semiahmoo Ravens Alumni weekend was held across the peninsula March 6-8, and featured hockey players of all ages in an event that also raised money for local non-profit organizations.
Semiahmoo Ravens alumni competed in an exhibition with NHL alumni players in a pro-am that was a highlight of the weekend, with mini-games featuring the Ravens’ U7 teams. In addition, a U17 A Showcase drew teams from Cloverdale, Langley, North Delta and the Ravens’ South Surrey and White Rock players.
There was also a U9 March Madness event that saw 32 teams compete.
Funds raised from the pro-am and throughout the weekend will go to Kid Sport Surrey & White Rock, the Canucks Autism Network, and Semiahmoo Minor Hockey, Semiahmoo Ravens executive director Scott Ackles said.
He hailed the alumni weekend as a triumph, and praised the community, hockey players and sponsors for helping to make it such a success.
“It was amazing,” Ackles said afterward, noting the minor hockey organization celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.
“We’re thrilled with the outcome and how the community turned out.”
While there’s still no official total, Ackles said the funds raised will likely come to close to $100,000.
“It was just a fun, fun event. It was pretty awesome.”
He also gave praise to the many volunteers who helped make it all happen.
“Nothing happens without volunteers, they’re our most precious commodity.”
