The owner of a Brampton restaurant says he’s on the verge of “giving up” after being the victim of multiple armed home invasions.
Jerry Pitamber is a local father and business owner, taking over the Calypso Hut restaurant from his parents following his parent’s death in 2014.
The family business has been around for decades, and is known for its Guyanese-Chinese fusion cuisine.
And while things may look fine to restaurant guests, Pitamber says he’s been struggling after his home has been broken into by armed assailants multiple times in recent years.
He says he was pistol-whipped in the most recent break-in, all while his children were home.
“This is the (third) time this has happened and I just feel like giving up,” the Brampton father said of the most-recent break-in on a GoFundMe page.
He has shared videos of the alleged break-ins on Calypso Hut’s social media pages, including clips showing men armed with what appear to be handguns rummaging through drawers and going through belongings.
“That’s everything I have, I’m telling you,” Pitamber can be heard saying to the armed and masked men in one clip. “There’s nothing here, I promise you. There’s nothing to take, I’ve given you everything.”
His mother’s wedding rings and jewelry – items that were supposed to be an heirloom he could pass down – were stolen in the last home invasions, along with his daughter’s piggy banks, the family’s passports, and money set aside for a vacation.
“I’m so tired of it and have never told anyone about the way I feel inside. I wouldn’t wish this feeling for anyone on earth,” he wrote on the fundraising page, which has received over $19,000 in donations of a $20,000 goal.
He said he started the fundraiser “as a last resort.”
Peel Regional Police did not respond to a request for comment by publication, but reportedly confirmed the three break-ins at Pitamber’s house to Now Toronto. Pitamber reportedly hasn’t had an update from investigators regarding the break-ins since the first one happened in 2022.
