Zach Galifianakis’ new Netflix show filmed in B.C., highlights Vancouver Island

A new Netflix show starring actor and comedian Zach Galifianakis is premiering next month, and showcases several locations in British Columbia, including Vancouver Island and the Southern Gulf Islands.

The show, called This is a Gardening Show, is described as a “refreshing and whimsical take on gardening” with Galifianakis both learning and teaching about how to garden and grow food.

“The way we get food is so perverse right now, I think we should talk about it,” says Galifianakis in the trailer. “And what we’re leaving for the next generation, they might have to know this stuff.”

It’s not all serious though, just a breath later Galifianakis asks, in his signature deadpan delivery, “Without sounding stupid, what is a tomato?”

The trailer shows clips from Vancouver Island’s Mount Washington and Brooklyn Elementary School in Comox.

Galifianakis also has a home on Denman Island and is known to spend time in the area.

This is a Gardening Show releases on Netflix on April 22.

“The series blends lighthearted comedy with a sincere appreciation for humans and nature,” reads the Netflix description. “Ultimately, This Is a Gardening Show is about the joy of connecting with the earth and people.”

Viewers may also recognize Galifianakis from movies like The Hangover or his talk show, Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis.

Netflix is no stranger to filming in British Columbia, sometimes dubbed “Hollywood North,” including on Vancouver Island.

Productions like TV series Maid and movie Rescued by Ruby spent most of their time in Greater Victoria. Another upcoming series, called Crew Girl, was filming in Sidney and Saanich over the winter.

While not a Netflix production, another Canadian series, called Yaga, recently filmed in Greater Victoria and made headlines after one if its stars – Hudson Williams – described B.C.’s capital as “dead as f***.”
