Paul Coffey suggested that he believes Evander Kane is the type of player to hold onto and re-sign for the future, citing the forward’s well-established place in the community.

The player resides in the city year-round, has developed good relationships with teammates and also with others in the Oilers organization, and has behaved to bring people together on and off the ice.

Coffey Believes it Will Be Hard to Replace Kane’s Locker Room Presence

In Coffey’s view, Kane’s locker room presence would be nearly impossible to replace. The fact that Kane was traded has introduced speculation that Coffey may have more of a say in player personnel matters down the road.

There are those who think that this trade introduced discussion of giving him more of a voice about roster moves and where the team is going overall, which is why he left the bench to move to a front office role.

Hall of Fame defenseman Coffey is currently an advisor to owner Daryl Katz and Mr. Katz’s son, Harrison Katz.

Drawing on his fabled playing career, extensive knowledge of the game, and unyielding opinion on how to assess players, his possible expanded role in hockey operations may mean the organization has decided on a new path for the decisions it makes down the road.
