The 29-year-old man originally charged with manslaughter in connection with a shooting in Whalley is now charged with second-degree murder, the Integrated Homicide Investigative Team said.

Police responded to a shooting at a home in the 13900-block of Laurel Drive around 1:40 a.m. on March 15. Upon arrival, police found a man suffering from gunshot wounds, and despite lifesaving measures by first responders, the victim died at the scene.

A man was taken into custody at the scene. Police believe that the accused and the victim knew each other.

Abo Abdel Kurdali was originally charged with one count of manslaughter on March 15, but on Thursday (March 19), the BC Prosecution Service upgraded the charge to second-degree murder.

“The upgrading of the charge in this investigation is a result of continued efforts by the investigative team and our partners,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “We continue to pursue every avenue and examine every detail to provide clarity and answers for the family. We extend our thoughts to the victim’s loved ones.”

Kurdali remains in custody until his next court appearance on April 17 at Surrey provincial court.
