Despite announcing his resignation as premier of Quebec, François Legault has decided to stay on as MNA of L’Assomption until the end of his mandate.
There had been some doubt as to whether Legault would keep his seat after a successor is chosen to replace him on April 12.
Christine Fréchette and Bernard Drainville are in the running to lead the Coaltion Avenir Québec — a party Legault founded in 2011 and has led ever since.
The winner will also become the province’s next premier until the next general election in October.
In a statement to Radio-Canada, Legault’s office confirmed his decision to remain on the job until then.
The statement says Legault considers it his duty to his constituents to stay on, and that he doesn’t want to leave them without representation at the National Assembly.
One of his priorities, the statement said, will be for him to use his position and remaining time in office to showcase some of the businesses in his riding as he closes out his political career.
