NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In its conference opener Saturday afternoon, the Belmont University men’s tennis team suffered its first-ever Horizon League loss with a 4-3 defeat at crosstown adversary Tennessee State. Despite winning the coveted doubles point, the Bruins (6-8, 0-1 Horizon) were unable to secure three singles wins as the host Tigers (2-10, 1-0 Horizon) took four of the six singles matches at the Hadley Park Tennis Center.

Entering the weekend, Belmont was 19-0 in Horizon League matches since joining the league prior to the 2023 season. The loss also snaps the Bruins’ 23-match conference win streak. Belmont had not lost a conference match since April 18, 2021 (at Jacksonville State, 4-3), when it was a member of the Ohio Valley Conference.

The Bruins’ No. 3 doubles tandem of sophomore Morgan Woodson and senior Eli Mizerski clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 triumph against Tennessee State’s Alexander Adamec and Adler Germinal. The win came moments after the Tigers’ top doubles team of Taj Hibbert and Mete Koseoglu evened doubles play with a 6-4 win versus senior Sabi Roi and junior Stefan Vedovelli.

Sophomore Charlie Robin and graduate Will Ecklund handled Tennessee State’s Nicholas Adamec and Tatenda Mutetwa with ease at No. 2 doubles (6-2).

Vedovelli was forced to retire due to injury following a set and two games at the top of the singles lineup, evening the match at 1-1.

Belmont responded with its two singles victories at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots with Woodson dismissing Nicholas Adamec 6-2, 6-2 on court four and Roi topping Koseoglu 6-1, 6-4 on court two.

Robin at No. 3 singles against Germinal and Mizerski at No. 5 singles against the Tigers’ Christopher Bogelin both faltered in tightly-contested straight-set matches, forcing the match to come down to court six. Freshman Bautista Durrels Rojo battled Alexander Adamec in the deciding match at the sixth position, but was edged in three sets.

Breaking Alexander Adamec’s service, Durrels Rojo took the first set, 6-4. However, Adamec stormed back for a 6-2 set two win and prevailed in the deciding third set, 6-4.
