Dragon Quest X Online originally launched all the way back in 2012 and its been going strong in Japan ever since. The game continues to receive regular updates, and Square Enix has just pulled back the curtain the next round of content, and it’s sure to be a bit divisive.

Square Enix has announced that they’re teaming with Google to introduce the generative AI model “Gemini” into Dragon Quest X Online. Gemini has been used to create a companion character called Chatty Slimey that players will be able to talk with in-game, and it will respond via AI-generated text and voice.

While playing Dragon Quest X Online, Chatty Slimey will be able to recognize and respond to on-screen information and can do things like comment on character outfit changes, congratulate you on taking down a tough enemy, or discuss a rare item that you’ve picked up. Chatty Slimey can also provide hints if you happen to get stuck on what to do next.

There will be a beta test for Chatty Slimey’s integration and applications are open until March 30th, 2026. There’s no word on when Chatty Slimey will be integrated into the game for all players, although we do know that Dragon Quest X Online‘s Version 8.0 expansion, Stray Children of Space and Time, is set to drop on June 25th, 2026.
