A small earthquake was recorded off the west coast of Vancouver Island Sunday afternoon, according to officials.
Emergency Info BC says the magnitude 4.0 quake struck approximately 261 kilometres southwest of Tofino at 12:23 p.m. local time.
Data from the U.S. Geological Survey indicates the quake occured at a depth of about 10 kilometres beneath the ocean floor.
No damage or injuries are expected as a result of the quake.
Earthquakes of this size are typically considered light and are often not felt, especially when they occur far offshore.
Vancouver Island sits along the Cascadia subduction zone, a seismically active region where the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate is being pushed beneath the North American plate, regularly producing small offshore earthquakes.
Officials say there is no tsunami risk associated with this event.
