Canada dropping to 25th place in the world happiness index is no surprise, given the state of the country. When Canadians can’t afford to put food on the table, a roof over their heads and gas in their cars, there’s bound to be unhappiness. Meanwhile, our federal politicians will receive their generous annual pay raises on April Fool’s Day. The not-so-funny joke’s on us!

Fact-finding mission

After I read Brian Lilley’s column, ‘Dumping Ground For Terrorists’ (Sun, March 12), I had a thought worthy of consideration. If the feds are having such a difficult time deporting all of the IRGC members, how about we citizens round up the entire Carney caucus, the heads of the various Immigration departments, and the lame judiciary routinely interfering with the deportation orders, and send them on a slow boat to Iran. They wouldn’t be getting deported, since that’s just about impossible these days. They would be on a fact-finding mission, to help them personally learn just what the IRGC is all about. It couldn’t hurt.

KEN PELLAND

(They’d be unlikely to find many facts)

Another turncoat

So another MP says they’re going to cross the table to the Liberals! I got news for you, Lori Idlout, the people in your riding voted you in for a reason, not to be a turncoat. This is totally unacceptable and shouldn’t be allowed. I hope the people in your riding let you know how they feel and how you stabbed them in the back.

RON HEWTON

(Floor-crossers have to face the voters at some point)

Trump’s world

Morning breakfast with Trump over cereal:
Destroy world economy: Check!
Make Canada the 51st state? Maybe next week.
Take over Greenland: pause till after breakfast.
Rip down half the White House: Done.
Destroy several countries: Done.
Cheat at a game of golf before lunch: Naturally.
Afternoon agenda: Fire non yes peons. Review thoughts over a Diet Coke.
Call buddies, Putin and Xi, to arrange sleepovers without getting caught: possibly.
Play another round of golf that I naturally win: Definitely.
Sidebar: name all major historical monuments Trump because I’m the greatest president ever!
This man is totally drunk on power. The scariest thing is he actually has his finger on the button that can destroy the planet.
Sleep well tonight.

(Never a dull moment)

Over-the-top price tag

I find it offensive to learn how much some government officials earn, namely governor-general. What is the message to Canadian people? Well, I know that you people struggle to survive ,but it must please you to know that you supply my almost-$400,000 salary, and since that is not enough for my lifestyle, also my $130,000-a-year allowance so I can look good. I know you’re counting pennies and some of you are losing your homes and others can’t even afford to buy one, but I still wonder, how happy you must be for me, that I am able to buy a $1,100 pair of shoes, high-end designer outfits and live like royalty and you pay for it? And all that is nothing compared to over $26,000,0000 that it costs to run my office that does not produce anything, does not contribute anything and, if it would disappear tomorrow, nobody would even notice. Except me and a huge group of my employees, because they would have to find actual jobs like working Canadians.

MICHAL SOCH

(We don’t mind our reps being well-paid, but it sometimes enters the realm of the ridiculous)

Democracy in peril

(Re: Editorial – ‘Longest ballot muddies electoral waters,’ Sun, March 21) Truer words were never spoken as it directly undermines free and fair elections! When we factor in the rise in floor-crossers willingly cancelling the wishes of their voters for their own personal gain, Canada’s very democracy is under serious attack! No wonder many Canadians are questioning the integrity of elections and the value of their vote! Willing to do virtually anything to win elections, the Liberal Party instituted the long ballot after trying everything else unsuccessfully to defeat Pierre Poilievre! Liberal governments have done nothing to stop foreign interference by China in federal elections, as Liberal candidates have been the beneficiaries! Then, unable to obtain a majority legitimately from the electorate, Carney will likely, for the first time in Canadian history, gain that by enticing floor-crossers. Canada no longer is in any position or has any credibility in criticizing validity of elections in other countries, thanks to power-hungry Liberals’ activities!

LARRY COMEAU, Ottawa

(Not sure the Liberal party ‘instituted the long ballot,’ but they’ve certainly been a beneficiary)

Talk is cheap

(Re: ‘We will no longer rely on others’: Carney announces plan for $32 Billion in far north defence upgrades,’ calgarysun.com) As a former combat soldier in the Canadian army, I believe Carney’s latest big pledge when I see it. No federal Liberal government in Ottawa has ever been solid advocates of our Armed Forces. Why should this Liberal prime minister be any different?

DONALD K. MUNROE, Three Hills

(He’s been saying some of the right things on defence. We’ll see if he follows through)

Bad idea

NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi says he is ready and wants an election now. Maybe you should look at the polls first. This is the guy who agreed with everything Trudeau did for 10 years, and we all know what happened to our once-great country after his reign of terror. Of course union workers will continue to vote NDP, as they want to be able to strike so they can cause nothing but grief in our health-care system and for our students. Mr. Nenshi, jump from one side of the fence to the other and people will catch on.

BARRY HARRIS, Edmonton

(Polls don’t appear to support the Nenshi NDP at the moment)
