The Canadian Football League’s Combine is this week in Edmonton. More than 100 athletes will be in the Alberta capital for the ultimate job interview.
The weekend will see the athletes showcase their individual abilities through a series of timed events, one-on-one and team-style drills, and interviews with football operations staff from across the league.
Regina’s Charlie Parks plays defensive line for the defending Hardy Cup Champion University of Saskatchewan Huskies. He says he is focused on the opportunity in front of him and concentrating on not making the moment too big.
“That’s the biggest thing. I’m here for a reason. I’m not here as a joke or because of somebody pulling strings for me. I’m here because I earned it, and I earned it because I’m good enough to be here.”
Parks says he is ultimately ready to make the experience fun.
“Fun is definitely the right word. Any excuse I get to play more football is a great one in my mind. I’m excited for the whole thing. Excited to compete against myself in the testing and then compete against guys that I know and guys that I don’t in the on-field stuff. It’s gonna be super fun. I just love competing.”
And the former Sheldon Williams Spartan isn’t worried about the numbers from his tests that may come up on the screen.
“The only standard that I ever really set for myself is better than the last time I did it.”
In short, Parks is ready for this opportunity.
“I’m confident. Very confident. Maybe too much.”
Players will take to the turf at the Commonwealth Field House in Edmonton on Friday before hitting the field on Saturday and Sunday at Foote Field.
