“This is the first time a Mets rookie won a true position player battle since Pete Alonso in 2019,” Sammon reported on Monday. “There is always pressure on young players to perform quickly in the league’s largest media market. Benge, however, is set to bat toward the bottom of the Mets’ lineup. It is also a team that underwent a major overhaul, meaning there are other storylines to monitor. Chief among them, after a disappointing 2025, the Mets need to at least make the playoffs.”
The 23-year-old Benge slashed .366/.435/.439 in spring training for the Mets. He is New York’s top position player prospect and made just 24 appearances with Triple-A Syracuse last season.
In 519 plate appearances across all minor league levels in 2025, Benge acrrued a .857 OPS with 15 homers and 22 stolen bases.

Benge’s roster chances were recently bolstered when Mets outfielder Mike Tauchman tore his knee, although Sammon suggests that Benge may have made the team, anyway.
