NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men’s tennis team got out to a quick start by winning the doubles point but it wasn’t enough as they lost 5-2 to the UIW Cardinals on Monday at the privateer Tennis Center.

New Orleans started the day just as the women did with a thrilling victory in doubles. This time it was the men’s flight two pair of Beltran Fernandez and Carlos Melgosa who scored a doubles point clinching 7-5 win.

That was off the heels of Gonzalo Cotter and Jacob Rouleau-Mailly who wrapped up their match with a 6-4 win at flight one.

However, once it got into singles, the Cardinals started to take over with five wins.

Emilio Vila had a service break to take the first set before winning the second set in a sweep on his way to a 6-4, 6-0 victory. Ian Uraga also won his match in straight sets for the Cardinals at 6-3, 6-4.

Augustin Salazar broke through in the first set, coming back from behind to win that by taking the last three games. Salazar won the second set by a double break in a 7-5, 6-2 decision.

The remaining three matches all went three sets and one went the way of the Privateers. Melgosa, who started hot by winning the first five games of the opening set, fended off Marcel Miralles 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.

UIW however took the other two matches that went the distance. Santiago Flyckt won a roller coaster match 7-5, 1-6, 6-1. Alejandro Hernandez rallied from behind for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win.
